Research into Character Types | Blog Post #6

Every genre has character types in them. Whether those character types be as common as the tertiary characters or as rare as a stock character. Most notably, protagonists, antagonists, and deuteragonists are used quite often in dramas. This is because they often play an essential role in influencing the plot of the film or theater.

Generally the main character is usually the protagonist of the story. The protagonist champions the most screen time and lines as they are the character that the audience focuses on. The plot and story board focuses on the fate of the protagonist as they are central to the drama. The protagonist often displays deep emotion.

The antagonist is the opposite of the protagonist as the antagonist maybe either hostile or in opposition to the goals of the protagonist. In most scenarios, the antagonist is better known as evil or the bad guy. The antagonist has the goals of opposing the main character and acting as an obstacle between the protagonist and their goals. The antagonist does not have to be a person, but could also be a man versus self and man versus nature scenario.

The deuteragonist is the character that is of second importance to the protagonist. This could be the heroine, or even the antagonist. The always hold a sort of relation or impact with the protagonist of the drama and typically influence the plot. This is due to the profound impact they may have on the protagonist.

I plan to use a protagonist that is quite vulnerable to make it clear that their efforts are very genuine. I need to make it look like they are striving to become better and improve. I will use the elements of a protagonist, mainly of which is the most screen time to emphasize how weak he is and how kind hearted he is. This will make the effects of his outcome all the more exciting as they get to see a kind hearted man triumph without the need of any otherworldly power.
