Look at what shopping dragged in! | Blog Post #18

If you haven't noticed, this is a play on the phrase "Look at what the cat dragged in." And while I would love to refer to myself to be as regal as a cat, I'm not one to engage in such narcissism. So today's post is a little different from the usual. Well, a lot actually. You see I work part time as I am a young budding cinematographer still in school. As a result, my weekends are never really free. However, I know what you have been thinking long before I got sidetracked: "Why the phrase?" Excellent question my perceptive audience!

So as the aforementioned context suggests, I was at work when I decided to go on break. My workplace is next to a mall so I decided to take a little walk there and make embarrassing attempts at pick-up lines while I was at it. However, I passed by a storefront selling sports and got this; Camera equipment! At my excitement, I hurriedly walked in and immediately began to inspect everything very closely. In other words, I touched literally everything.

I found a small stand that gives a slight elevation off the ground and found it quite interesting. If we look back to the previous year's film, I had bought all sorts of equipment and stands but nothing was really specialized to assist with low-angle shots. With power dynamics being a largely crucial aspect of my short film I knew just had to have it.

This shorter stand will allow the camera to be steady and yet also capture the low angles very well. Additionally, this allows us to do wide angles and master shots all while making use of spaces to make them appear larger or smaller than what they really are. Given the unique building I have chosen, space is certainly no luxury. After buying the stand for the tormentingly pleasing (I'm not a masochist) price of $8.99, I walked back towards work with a grin, pleased with my lucky catch and my break void of all embarrassment!
